One of the greatest opportunities we experience through Iowa Women Lead Change is the phenomenal women we meet through our IWLC events. One of those women is Dr. Tererai Trent, whose story of courage and determination begins in her homeland of rural Zimbabwe, continues with her relocation to the United States with her family and her incredible efforts to earn a PHD, be discovered by Oprah Winfrey and to return to Zimbabwe to provide educational opportunities to boys and girls in her rural area.
Today I consider Tererai both an inspiration and a friend. She has touched me in a way that I cannot adequately describe. I know that she has touched countless IWLC conference attendees with her impassioned personal story and her fervor to help the children and women in her homeland.
Tererai is a wonderful storyteller who captures the hearts and minds of her audiences. I am proud to say that through her book, The Awakened Woman, not only can we savor Tererai’s incredible prose, but we can also create a path to achieve our own dreams.
The book’s publisher describes The Awakened Woman as: “One woman’s journey from child bride in a cattle herding village in Zimbabwe to earning a PhD in America, Oprah’s “favorite guest of all time,” and one of the world’s most recognizable voices in women’s empowerment and education, Dr. Tererai Trent’s manifesto helps women reawaken to, and realize, their sacred dreams.”
